what would be the symptons? before doing an actual test

WOuldn't start, lack of power if it did. Hessistation on acceleration, might back fire depending on how bad the rings are.

hard starting, poor power, poor acceleration, poor fuel economy, excessive blow by, oil fouled plugs, engine miss, excessive oil consumption, etc.

Add to the list an engine that spins awhile after the key is shut off. With the engine running, pull the PCV valve from the valve cover and look for blowby being expelled from the valve cover. Now give it some gas and see how much comes out of the valve cover.
