Rear End- What Type?

Hiya Fellers-
I hope someone can help me with a stupid question on a 98 Club Wagon. I had a leak at the rear and pulled the cover. I want to refill, but I cant tell what type of rear I have-- Here are the choices: (1) Ford 8.8/9.75 inch conventional and traction lock or (2) Dana 9.75 inch (M60-IU). The reason I want to know is to determine if I need to add a friction modifier. I've read the tags, but I still cant tell.

Any advice will be appreciated

Is it an E150, E250, or E350. I'm pretty sure you're gonna have an 8.8 in an E150, possibly a 9.75, more likely a 10.25 in an E250, and a sterling 10.25 in an E350.

pfogle--thanks for getting back to me. I bought it used and it didn't come with a manual. How can I tell if it is an E150, E250, or E 250? -- There are no markings on the body
Thanks Again,

150s will have five lug nuts on the wheel, 250/350 will have 8.

A better way to tell is: an 8.8 has 10 bolts on the differential cover in a square pattern. The 9.75 has 12 bolts in a trapezoid pattern. I believe the dana has 10 bolts, but they won't be in a square formation. Maybe some danas have more?

You can probably find pictures to help you if you do a google image search.

To find out if you have trak lok: jack both rear wheels of ground and put in neutral/ Now spin one wheel by hand and see if the other rotates the same direction you have trak lok, if opposite it's an open diff.

Welcome to the site !

Since it has a inspection cover, it is a Dana rear.

9" rear ends don't have a cover.

Tag Info !
So why didn't you post the tag info?
I could have told you exactly what you have in this post ?

You can also head down to the Large Vans Forum here on FTE to help you out with E-series Van questions.

Mil1ion: It didn't occur to me to put the tag # until after I posted. BTY-- How do you think I got my name? Here's the tag# S746A 4588 06.--- I assume the "88" tells the story?

Thanks for getting back to me.

I assume that should be a 458 then 8.8

then D06

If so then yes it is a 8.8 rear.

The rest of the code is date, plant and bearing info.

If the axle code on the door jam sticker has a letter in it, "H9", it is Track-lok, if all numbers "19", its an open diff. The example here is an 8.8 3.55 ratio.
