A while back I developed this problem with my 98 F150 . . . the wipers wouldn't shut off. When I turn on the ignition the wiper sprayer sprays for 5 seconds or so, the wipers wipe on low and then when the sprayer is done doing its thing the wipers take off on high and stay there, never shutting off. So, the dealer tells me its probably the multi switch, so I replace that, the problem remains. Then I read that the wiper motor could be the problem . . .
Ok,
so I finnnnaaaalllly get the darn wiper moter assembly out from under the cowl, get it swapped out with a new one, plug it back in and they still don't shut off (the wipers). Does anybody out there have any other ideas, I DO NOT want to leave myself in the hands of the local dealer.

WOW that is weird.. I would try to get some electric schematics on it. See if there is a control module wired in somewhere (intermittant wipers?). I would also check all the grounds. Maybe even check the fuses to make sure your not getting some type of feed back. On old 1960's american cars you could make the wipers and or the radio work with out a key just by hold down the brake (turning on the brake lights), turn on the four ways and turn on the turn signal. Yes, it did work and there was nothing wrong with the car either just a design of the electrical system back then. .
Wow, that is kind of odd. I really never looked at the one on my truck but will tommorrow. I had a similar problem on an S dime, same symptoms and the problem ended up being the wiring loom that plugged into the wiper motor had too many wires and was weighing down the connection and that was making the wiper stay on all the time. I tied it up and never had any problems after (with the wipers anyway, the truck is a diffirent story)
The plug for the wiper motor has 6 wires and was still supported with the stock hangers, there really wasn't any weight on the wires or the plug . . .(sigh) . . . I guess now, I need to figure out if the problem is between the multi switch and the fuse box or between the motor and the fuse box. Also, any body know what colored wire to look for as being the shorted out culprit? Any wiring diagrams out there?
In the fuse box under the hood there are a couple relays for the wipers. Your owner's manual should show which ones they are. Swap them with a couple other relays from in the fuse box and see what happens.
If that doesn't do anything then you may have a problem with the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) which is attached to the back of the fuse box under the dash.
The diagnosis for that is different depending on what options your truck has. Does it have power windows and locks?
Since you already did the motor itself, it probably is not the microswitch inside the motor itself... So I am right away thinking Relay of some kind.
On the schematic, There's 2 relays connected to the wiper motor portion of the diagram. the GEM's color coded wires run to these relays. 1.) Wiper run/Park relay has 2 wires coming off the GEM, yel/white -and- LT Blue with LT Blue controlling the switch portion of the Relay. 2.)Wiper Hi/Lo Relay has one wire coming off the GEM, gray/LT Blue........the switch portion of the Hi/Lo Relay feeds from the run/park relay.
Where these relays reside physically on the truck is a question for a seasoned veteran tech, but I would guess the bug in your wiper system lies in one of these relays. There's like 4 other relays on the diagram, but I'm thinking start with those two , call the dealer and suggest that, and see what they say..
manual locks and windows, manual 5 speed trans, dual air bags, regular cab, long bed, air, blah, blah, blah . . . Overall decent truck I bought this used, so no owners manual. would chilton's or somebody else have the wiring diagram and the location of the gem module. maybe even a pic of what the relays look like . . . is that too much to hope for? (lol) thanks for all of your help guys, this one is nearly making me hairless. . . (and THAT would not be pretty, chuckle).
I have a similar condition where just out of the blue the wipers would come on once.... then another time they would stay on and I would turn the wiper switch on and off real quick and they would go off for a while.
The dealer said it would take too long to figure out the problem and since it's not a safety issue they didn't have the time for it.
Good luck, hope to see your resolution!
