I broke down the other day and had my V-10 tuned up at the local Ford house. I did it for insurance against a plug blowout. As it turns out the first time I tow my 5th wheel (over 20,000 GCWR), my mpg goes to 8.8 on one tank and 9.2 on another. This is almost .5 better mpg than I was getting.
I don't know if the new plugs and such had anything to do with it, but I couldn't explain it any other way because I actually had a slight but noticeable head wind.
By the way I drive about 57-62 when towing with the overdrive off. It generally stays from 2800 to 3100 rpms at these speeds and feels just right going down the highway.
I was one of the first to have a 05 3v V10 and when I claimed to get 9.4 MPG average at max GCVW over a 1600 mile trip I was soundly called a liar. ( hundreds of up hill miles out of OD and mid range RPM to keep it all motivating around 65-70 ish)
You sound very happy with the 8.8 to 9.2 heavy towing averages (and you should be)
But damn man don't you understand? If you had a 6.0L PSD you could be getting 13MPG.... (some folks just don't understand that a gas motor hauling 20,000+ pounds up hill and getting better then 5-7 mpg is clearly a miracle!)
Yes sir the new plugs, air filter and new oil all help to make her smoother and more powerful.. you should always expect about 0.5 to 0.7 mpg gains after a good clean 'n tune!
Thanks Fred. However you did leave out the part about the diesel getting up the hill faster, lasting 400,000 miles and the ever popular getting your money back on trade in. As you can tell I've heard all the stories.
You also forgot about new turbo's every 30,000, $50 oil changes, $20 fuel filters, $2.99.99 a gallon and my wife just LOVES the sweet smell.
On the other hand, My '01 did a little better after a tuneup, unfortunately I also did headers, FM70, K&N and took that little 2" snorkle off the intake. My foot took away any added mileage and my rear tires are paying for it. But my BSEG got bigger!
oohhh please
don't talk about rear tires and the bseg club. ever drive a reprogramed 05 ,3v yet? you may not want to. as it can get a tad scary at times. esp. if the pavment is a little wet and the tires don't want to bite down.
$165.00 at the Ford Dealership and it was plugs, filters and checked everything on the computer to be sure it ran as programmed. I'm not sure what all they found and tweaked.
