Leaking axle fluid

I noticed this morning I have a small leak on the right front axle, axle grease is leaking from the end of the axle tube, so it is probably the seal. Is this the seal that you have to pull the differential to replace the seal? Does anyone have a parts list/picture of this seal, I have tried to find a picture of it online but everywhere I looked they only showed a view of a 250 light duty.

Thanks for any help,

Does anyone know anything about this or is this something new, the truck has 70,000 miles on it?

Is it fluid or grease? Did you do ball joints recently?

Sorry but you're right. Inner diff. seals. Yes, you have to strip the axles, they are installed from the inside. The seal at the outer end of the tube is more or less just a dust seal. Are you going to attempt a fix yourself?

Yes, I am going to attempt the fix myself, but I am having problems finding any info about it. I have tried finding a exploded parts pic but all I can find is about the 250 light duty. Have you replace the seals before?

Check with your dealer. My parts guy will alway print an exploded view of the assembly for me. Just ask for the seal and they sould print it for you then ask price, maybe you'll want to try somewhere else. Big $$$ for dealer parts.

I stopped this afternoon and got some of the tools I need to do the job. I tried to get the parts I need but the parts guy was little help, he wants me to bring him the old parts to match up with. I found this list of parts from the post how to replace ball joints:

Wheel Bearing:
Ford # C6tZ-3123-A $9.30 each
NAPA # B2110 $6.42 each

Small Knuckle Seal or "Dust Seal"
Ford # F81Z-1S175-HCA $15.46 each
NAPA # 21918 $8.99 each
National #710413 $7.84 each

Hub Assembly Seal (small yellow seal)
Ford #F81Z-4A322-AA $3.48 each
NAPA N/A N/A

But I need the numbers for the axle seals themself, does anyone know the part number for the axle seals?

Thanks,

Daniel

Check for an open vent and check that the fluid is not over filled first.

The other seal p/n's

2C3Z-3254-AA for inner diff seals
F81Z-3254-CB for the big axle to knuckle seal - or
3C3Z-3254-CA if it has a steel plate/deflector on the back - visible while assembled in truck.
These are the seals you REALLY need the special tool for - to install the seal on the axle as well as installing the axle into the knuckle.

So the "2C3Z-3254-AA for inner diff seals" are the actual axle seals? Talked again with the parts guy and he says the F81Z-3254-CB is for a 2 wheel drive and mine take the 3C3Z-3254-CA . I looked under the truck and I can see the steel plate/deflector on the back. I am going to make the tool as seen in a previous post to install 3C3Z-3254-CA, and I have the tool for installing the axle seals. Is the synthetic diff oil good that Ford sales or should I go with something else? Oh and I checked the level and vent and everything looked Ok there.

Thanks everyone for your help,

Daniel

I think you need a new parts guy. (Hate to be a smart ***, but I've been a Ford "parts guy" for 28 years, and do most of the work on my own rigs.) The 3254 doesn't even have a 2WD application. The "2C3Z" is the inner seal installed from inside the housing with the diff. removed. Synthetic lube is not required in front axles, we just use 80/90.

Well, I was thinking the same thing, he used to be a good parts guy, but lately they have had some rough times at the dealership. They just made the whole dealership personal take a 15% pay cut. They have had alot of tech, parts and body men quit because of it. I apprciate the help on the part numbers, I thought Ford used synthetic or semi synthetic from the factory, why is it not used on the front?

My guess is to save a buck. Front end will never see the abuse the rear does (for SOME of us at least!) since it's not locked in most of its life.
