I have an 85 F250 with a 460 and dual tanks. When I try to start the truck it will start after cranking for a few seconds and then run for a few seconds, then it sputters out and dies. Could this be anything other than the fuel pumps? I have electric pumps in the tanks.
You might need a new oil pressure switch. The oil pressure switch has 2 circuits on it for "start" and "run". It will start fine at 0 pressure, but if the oil pressure reads lower than 5 psi after it's running, it will shut off the fuel pumps on the "run" circuit. Ford did this to shut keep fuel from pumping into the engine bay if you got into an accident and the fuel line ruptured and sprayed gas everywhere thus causing a fire.
I did away with this set-up on my 86 F-250HD. I took the two wires from the switch and wired them into a toggle switch and then I mounted it to the firewall under the dash.. It works like an anti-theft device, and it hasn't hurt my truck yet.
