I have a 1999 F350 Lariat 7.3 Powerstroke that is giving me fits. The overhead console has the mileage computer and it works intermitant and is really dim sometimes. I've had it apart, checked the voltage and ground and cannot find anything wrong. Do the small chips go bad? Anyone else had this problem?
Mine had to be reset everytime that you started the engine to get it to calculate mpg. I never have heard if this is the way it is supposed to be or not? But the display started getting dim and gradually went completly out. I haven't had the time to tear into it to see whats going on, I was told that the solider on the chips was a known issue on these trucks. Personally I will probably start watching ebay when I get a minute.Sorry I didn't have an answer for you but at least you know that you aren't alone.
I actually have had the same problem with mine.. There is a chip that the contacts come lose after a while.
There is a user on this board that has in his gallery how to fix the problem. That is how I got mine fixed. I will try to locate it for you and post it..
I followed the instructions provided, it was pretty easy. Put everything back together and it works. One thing I noticed is that in the right hand corner of the LED readout there appears to be a black burned or overheated area on the inside of the glass. I surmise that something is wrong and this problem will surface again.
Question...does anyone have a source for a new board other than my local Ford dealer?
No solder, just checked all the components and made sure everything was tight (it was) and cleaned the dust off and replugged in the connector. The only thing wrong that I could see was the obvious overheat indication (looked burned ) on the right side (inside ) the LED glass. Everything has continued to work, but the readout looks dimmer than it was. I would expect that the same failure will repeat itself when I take an extended drive. I have only used the truck on short trips to town. If I can't find an aftermarket replacement, I will probably bite the bullet and go to my local dealer for a new module for about 125.00. ouch!!!Thanks for all the suggestions.
