Battery Voltage???

Ok--I have been having problems with cold starts/running. I have read several threads on here before I posted this. So here goes. I have done the GPR test and all is fine. However while the GPR is energized the voltage on the larger posts drops from 12.5 to about 10.5. Should I be getting a drop in voltage or is this a sign that my batteries are getting weak? I have an 02 F250 4X4 with 92,000 miles on it and the batteries are original.

During the first 20 seconds your GP's are activated they draw about 200 Amps. Sounds like your battery/s maybe getting weak. Have them load tested at an auto parts store.

Ok--after that initial 20 seconds the GP's turn off right? And then what? Do they come back on until the oil temperature of 131F is reached? Because now its all coming together in that my problems come after that initial 20 to 30 seconds of running.

Bubba767dad I agree with PSNut that you are looking at weak batteries due to the 10 volt reading. I think it should be higher even when the glow plugs are on. However I'm getting mixed signals from you on just exactly what problems you are having. It sounds like you are saying the truck starts ok, but then a minute later it starts having some issues. That doesn't tell me that the glow plugs are bad, but that something else is wrong.

Thats right----I feel like it starts fine---I back out the driveway --get a couple of hundred yards down the road and bam---it starts making all kinds of racket/clatter and bogging. this only happens if I don't plug it in. If I plug it in it does fine. Thats why I asked if the GP's come back on until the oil reaches temperature? I believe they are coming on durring the initial start up and going off after 20-30 seconds. Once it gets up in temperature a little everything is fine. The problem I am having with believing its the batteries is that once it is running my alternator is putting out about 13.5 VDC so how could I have a voltage problem once it is running? I want to check eack GP but I am understanding that I have to remove the valve covers to do so? Are the GP's covered by the 100k warranty for the $100 deductible?

How cold is it where you live? I'm thinking a different weight oil might solve the problem.

OK. The oil probably isn't affecting your truck. A lot of people in colder climates change their oil to avoid the romps in the winter. I doubt it's your battery since it takes a lot more to cycle glow plugs and turn the starter and fire the injectors to get it going than to keep it going.

I just tested my batteries for voltage with glow plugs on.. got a reading on my 7 year old original motorcraft batteries at 11.2 volts. Key off was 12.4 volts... FYI

Sounds like I will try the new bateries tonight then----My voltage drops from 12.5 to 10.5 with just the GP's on---then drops below 9 volts while cranking. But it doesnt seem like its starting hard just afterwards. Oh well. I will try the new batteries.

Try disconnecting the bateries and do a voltage read on each one. The readings should be close in voltage.

Well, I had the batteries tested----one was bad. I replaced both with 850cca batteries. Changed my oil and I added some DK (grey bottle) to the fuel and ran about 200 miles this weekend---What a difference. Got in this morning and started right up with no problems, went to work whithout any problems what-so-ever. What is really amazing is that my PSD is very very quiet now???? I guess the DK is that good. I want to thank all of you for saving me hundreds of dollars--I was going to take it to the Stealer this morning.
