I have a 2001 Expy with 4.6L and 2WD -- I am considering changing the rear axle ratio from the current 3.31 to a 3.73.
My quesiton is what has to be done to get everying else correct -- speedometer / transmission shifting / etc, other than obvious ring and pinion change.
I just want to up my towing capability about 1000 lbs to tow a slightly larger boat -- will be towing somewhere in the low 6000 which is slightly above the 2001 - 4.6L 2wd limit
that should give me an increase - without more mileage loss-- It is also FLAT here in Florida
I have towed the old boat about 30,000 miles since I have had it -- from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and across most of the US several times -- so I have a good handle on my towing expectations.
Do you know what easy limited slip options I might have??? (for a more slippery boat ramp if needed)
find a wrecked expy with the gears and ls rear axle (or even a f-150) you want and swap it in, sure will be a lot easier (no gear setup required), but dunno it it'd be cheapy though.

well even the gear change won't give you the added capacity. you are trying to exceed the GVWR and that is illegal in all the states , so don't get caught by a cop on the interestate who decides to scale you. the fine here is 2,100.00 for every 1,000 lbs. the other componets of that truck are not made to handle the added weght. the expy with the 4.6 comes with all light duty parts the 5.4 model comes with all the upgrades and heavy duty parts.
