if you want to drive one, you need a really rich father...or wife....or be born into royalty..
If your content riding in the back with your head down, then you just need to be really fast and strong, with a clean criminal record so you can emigrate to a bobsledding nation.
Two tracks in the USA that I know of - Lake Placid, NY and Park City, UT. I don't think you necessarily need rich parents, just motivation. And the guts to wear those tight racing costumes (talk about male cameltoe!).
Get in your car and drive to Lake Placid or Calgary or soon Vancouver BC. Those are the only tracks that I know of in NA. When you get there make sure you can sprint like a jackrabbit and weigh about 230 lbs.
then try and get on a team and win consistently. Easy LOL
On a lighter note, I heard on the radio during the 1988 Olympics the the #1 pickup line in Calgary bars was "I am a member of the US Bobsled team!"
...thought it was kind of humourous until I got to work and the receptionist, looking a liitle dishevelled, says to one of the other girls
"I met a guy from the US bobsled team last night..!"
Bobsledders have really changed over the years. First, it was guys nuts enough to ride the thing. Then, it became football player types. Now, they are competitive athletes who train constantly. I made parts for several Olympic bobsleds (I'm a toolmaker), and one of our sleds was the 3rd US sled in Salt Lake . It didn't compete, but got to test the track and set-up timers and stuff. You start out as a brakeman, focusing on sprinting speed. I'm not sure how, but you then get track time in learning to drive. You would basically have to relocate to one of the two tracks mentioned, and hopefully get a ride. We were building sleds to try to help the poorer athletes get a ride.
After you become the best bobsledder, win the bronze, silver, or even gold medal, get national news attention, and are sexy-looking, and an eligible bachelor or bachelorette. You won't be any richer, and no one will remember your name. Why bother freezing your butt off? I'd rather see team snow-ball fighting as a winter olympic sport, at least I can relate to that.
