Clevelor 302 Build
I have a mid 80's 302 thats bored 0.40 over it has D80E heads on it w\oversized
valves in it. its got 6000 miles on it. the pistons are cast. now what i want to do is i have a set of D1AE 2V heads ported with 2.19 In. & 1.71 Exh. which are both 4V valves i left the intake ports as close to stock as i could for low-end.
counterbored all for hardened seats. and bored valve pockets 0.25 less than the bore for seats, now i am going to need to order new pistons that are cut for the canted valves on the D1AE 2V heads they are open chamber.
can any one tell me what set of pistons i will need to order to keep compession
at 10:to 1 or 10.5 to 1 and can i run a 302 intake with spacers to match the ports on the heads ? and yes i know about the holes to drill ,and the ones to plug. im just not sure what pistons i need. hopefully someone that knows about this will tell me the real deal. thanks dave
In the meantime, perhaps someone who does know will speak up. It seems it's getting harder and harder to find someone who still works with this swap as there are so many good aftermarket heads available these days for the 302/351.
Do you already have an intake manifold?
ON EDIT: Maybe Boss 302 pistons are what you need. Look here. (Although these are std.)

the pin is in not the same place so my compression will drop. i want to be around 10:to 1 i have all my own valve grinding mach.& seat grinder and k.o. lee seat counterbore setup so thats why i want to use the cleveland heads thanks dave
With open chamber heads it will be hard to obtain a 10:1 compression ratio. DO NOT rely on factory numbers for anything, measure everything to be sure. My closed chamber 351 is currently 10.03, my cumbustion chamber is about 65cc, I have the daoe 4bbl heads.
as for intake adaptors, price motorsports has them. I will have to find the website.
IMHO, use aftermarket windsor heads!
Putting a Boss piston on a regular 302 rod will put the piston .065" down from the deck at TDC. This will greatly lower the compression ratio AND cause detonation problems due to lack of quench area.
In other words, Boss 302 pistons must be used with Boss 302 rods or 289 connecting rods, not ordinary 302 rods.
BTW- howdy, neighbor!

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
looks like i need to get boss 302 pop up pistons and boss rods or 289 rods,
i did not see in the articles about what pushrods they used also is the 351 rockers like the 302 that you just torque down or what? i wrote down all the part numbers for the things that i will need i still think this is a worth while
project since i need to buy pistons for the 302 i bought they are only cast and only having 6000 miles on it.
i will just hone it and get the forged boss 302 pistons hope they make them in
0.40 over. thanks again. dave
Another consideration for you might be Aussie heads, which have the smaller ports and valves along with the smaller quench combustion chambers.
For that matter, I believe this was actually a production engine Down Under and so might be a good source of parts and info.
