Coolant leak

I've got a coolant leak that appears to be coming from the rear of the engine on my '96 Mazda B3000, 3.0L, 145K miles. After the vehicle reaches normal running temp, I can see coolant leaking from the tranny/flywheel cover.

My guess is a rusted freeze plug on the rear of the block. Having never had it apart, is there any thing else I should look for? I didn't see any other leaks and/or coolant trails from any other part of the engine.

Thanks for any help.

Mike

Something that might help you pin point the exact location of the leak if you haven't already done it is get a pressure tester. I know that Auto Zone will lend you one for a small saftey deposite that you will get back whenever you bring the tool back. By doing this you take all the guess work of where your leak is coming from and safe money in the long run because you aren't just throw parts at it to safe money. Plus if your Mazda is anything like my 98 Ranger when it comes to the freeze plugs they are a pain in the butt to get too.

I've tried the Auto Zone tester and it will not fit my radiator properly. The leak is coming from an area that I won't be able to see ( the rear of the engine block).

I'm assuming that it's just a freeze plug gone bad. I'm just curious if there are any other possibilities such as a leaking gasket or something else that would leak from the rear of the engine.

Is the leak more on the passenger side? If yes, then investigate a heating system problem. It could be the heater control valve, a rotted heater hose, or even your heater core. I've seen this many times. GL.

The coolant is dripping from the front bottom dead center of the transmission where the flywheel cover plate attaches. Any leak from a hose or heater core/component shouldn't enter this area.
