I have a 1990 ford f150 4x4 with automatic transmission, lately when i am at a complete stop and accelerate i get this vibration that lasts for about a second. I took it to a local car shop and the mechanic said it could be the driveshaft sticking to the transmission and not sliding as it should, so i took off the driveshaft regreased it and stuck it back in there but im still getting the same vibration. you can't feel it when your moving and if not at a complete stop you dont feel it.
Any Idea's what it could be?
im pretty sure they changed it when they changed my oil, that was less than a month ago when i bought the truck
I wouldn't be sure about anything. Check the fluid by pulling out the dipstick and looking at it. If it smells burned or is brownish, it's time to change it. The fluid should be a bright red, no discoloration.
Your problem may not even be torque converter shutter, but this is just a possibility.
Torque shudder usually only happens when the converter clutch locks up. From what I recall reading, this is only supposed to happen in steady cruise mode. The converter is not supposed to be locked up under acceleration. I am no tranny expert but I believe this is correct.
There was a TSB regarding lubricating the slip shaft on the tail of the tranny with I think a Silicone grease.
Like the other guys said you also need to check other suspension parts. Do you have the truck raised up? This often causes problems with the U joints. Also check the center U joint carrier to make sure it hasn't come loose.
I would guess u-joint or rear brake sticking, But if they just changed the Tranny fluid, I would'nt rule out a slightly different fluid, if mixed it could cause a temp shudder in converter.
