yesterday I was driving out to my shop from home and each time I would brake I could feel some weird pulsing in the brake pedal .... Eventually the abs light came on, pulsing went away. At about the same time I would hear noise coming from underneath, the noise would be there only on maintaining speed and deccel .... 0 noise on acceleration .... when I was almost at the shop my speedo started going up and down without the speed of the truck working. I pulled it in the shop and looked at the tranny from underneath .... everything looks fine (it was rebuilt in september) ... I take a look back at the diff and oil is dripping from it. I went back and looked at it the sensor on the top was broken ... some copper wire was sticking out of it, a magnet was at the end of it .... it was passed midnight so I figured go home and go visit ford in the morning and get a sensor ( I dont know what it does :S ). I went and picked up some gear oil and lsd additive. Went out there tonight to fix it .... pulled the back cover off the diff and chunks fall out ..... i grab all the pieces, and its a spider gear in pieces on my floor. there is also a ring gear of some sort in there its stuck ... it doesnt turn with the rest of the gears.
what the hell is going on????
the rear rotors were changed by a shop less the 40 miles ago ... about 6 days ago now
Check out Guzzles instructions on changing the rear diff fluid, there is a pic in there of what the gears are supposed to look like. Sounds to me like the abs ring or whatever it is actually called, shattered. It is the little slim one. That really sucks, because you will probably have to pull diff out of the housing to fix. Not to mention what other things happened as a result.
correct me if im wrong, but on a dually, dont you need to pull the axleshafts to remove the rotors? this may be your problem, that the shop f'ed up the installation and stressed the spider gears that eventually failed. im not sure on this as i have never torn into my dually, but i think my logic is correct.
that sensor on top of the diff is the VSS , or Vehicle Speed Sensor. $20.

You are correct strokin_it. I just verified via Helminc that the axle must come out first to be able to remove the hub assembly. The rotors are bolted onto the back side of the hub. Hub MUST be removed to replace the rotors.

Tone ring, or target ring. The little spikes on the ring passing the magnet of the sensor is what's creating the signal for the ABS, speedo, etc.
With chunks moving around in there it would not surprise me if the ring gear has suffered some damage in the form of a compression fracture. I would recommend rebuilding the the whole thing. Give the axle shafts a through inspection as well.
I believe you have a dana 80, most likely 4.10 gears. best bet is to look in the door jam for axle code, or look on the tags for the diff cover. they will say what it is for sure. Then just start looking. You might try fordpartsnetwork.com then click on the catalog. Did a quick search and depending on your diff, it looks moderate to outrageous. I'd really push for the shop that did the brakes to fix it in either case. Sounds like they didn't get something right.
