Rear Door

The driver's side rear door on my 97 Explorer won't open from the inside. I have fiddled with the child lock feature, but can't get it to work. I suppose there is something going on in the door.

If you remove the inside door liner, I think you'll find a plastic connector broken on the steel rod that runs from the inside handle to the latch. It may have just come loose, but it's likely broken. As I recall, it was a couple of dollars from the dealer.

The latch should have three of these rods going to it, one for each door handle (inside, outside) and one for the lock button. There may be a fourth rod going to the power lock actuator.

Very common problem on Explorers. Latches are made of cheap plastic material that are easily broken when someone pulls on the handle while the door is locked. I think I've replaced 4 or 5 over the years. Need to take the interior door panel off and replace the latch/handle assembly. Last time I bought one from Ford they were about $20. I believe there is only one rod connected to the assembly. First time about 30 minutes to replace, subsequent times only 10 or 15 minutes to replace.

As Mason said, this was what happened to mine as well. The fix was a new interior handle/latch for about 20 bucks. Once I had the door panel off it was a 10 minute fix.

No, the replacements aren't any better. There the same cheap plastic.
