Transfer case rebuild/replace?
Hi folks
I have a '96 F150 with I6, 4WD, 5 spd. M5OD transmission. 4WD is manual.
Yesterday I was driving along with no problem. Hubs were in the locked position but transfar case was in 2WD. After a brief stop, I heard a loud banging from the front and the truck shuddered then would not move. Acted as if it were in neutral.
I shifted into 4WD and was able to drive the truck to a safe location. No power to the rear in 2WD.
My question is this - should I be looking at a rebuild kit, a replacement transfer case, and does anyone have an idea of what is actually wrong with this thing? I plan on removing it this weekend though I'd like to know what I may be up against.
