I just bought a 76 f-150 ranger xlt, and have now knowledge of fords. I was wondering why on the title it says it's a three quarter ton, but it has five lug axles. It also has a 390 in it that gets about 6 miles to the gallon is this normal? It has a Holley carb that just blew the power valve. If I switch carbs what is a good size to go with? Thanks.
3/4 ton but an F150........makes no sense to me.
Holley's are not fuel misers to begin with, but if the powervalve really is gone, it would use a lot more fuel than normal.
F-150s are 1/2 Ton or technically 5/8 ton.
but 1/2 ton was a better selling ad. So ford called it an 1/2 ton.
a 600cfm is all you need for 390, form stock to very mild.
What do you think about a Carter 500cfm? I use the truck to go back and forth from work, and I'm going to pull a trailer with a jeep on it about 6,000lbs. Would that be enough carb?
Thanks for all the help
[font color=red size=2]I have a '73 F100 with a stock 390 and I put a 600 Edelbrock 4 barrel on it (Edelbrock and Carter 4 barrels are almost identical), and I am very happy with it. I tuned it when I got it (about 2 years ago) and haven't had any trouble yet.)
I have had a 650 Holley with vacuum secondaries in the past and I was very UNhappy with that one - very touchy and terrible mileage, always tuning and replacing those darned power valves... Holleys are more for those who are into hi-performance and enjoy fixing and tuning on a regular basis.
I think the 500 would be a little small for a 390. I would suggest you go with a 600 Edelbrock or Carter. That is about the correct size for a stock daily driver 390. And you will be happy with it.
Of course this is all my opinion, so take it for what it's worth...;-)

If your title says a three quarter ton and you have five lugs and 15 inch tires you have a problem. Check your vin # against the books and see what you come up with? Also make sure you have the same number on your title as you have on the truck. More then likly someone made a mistake on the title but you need to get it taken care of the next time you pick up your tag.
The title thing is the same with my pickup. It says I own a F250 4x2 and its a F150 4x4. This occured from swapping cabs and frames after a rollover before I bought it. I have licensced it for 3 years no problem, so I dont think you have anything to worry about.
I have a 68 with a 390, it has a cam and ported heads. I got 7 miles to the gallon with my holley 750. (Which never sealed, leaked, flooded, and pissed me off royally! it found a new home in the bottom of a lake!)
Anyway I bout a new edelbrock 600, bolted it on, and started it up with almost 12 miles to the gallon. Almost the same performance, until you get over 3800 RPM then it won't keep revving.
I say toss the holley out, get an edelbrock performer in 600 cfm and be done with it!
when you regestier your truck you can set the tonage what ever you want it to be. my F150 is reg. as a one ton.but i put 3/4 ton axels on it.

Frank, Your truck should be regestered as it is on the title. That weight is listed on in.
In North Carolina the weight tag on the truck has to cover the total (loaded) weight of the truck plus any loaded trailer being towed by said truck. I have a 4000lb tag on my truck, if I decided to buy another truck and needed to haul it on a trailer, rather that tow it on my dolly, and a DOT cop pulled me over and either weighed me there or made me go through the truck scales, I would be SOL, and facing big fines. I can buy heavier weight tags for my truck, say 10,000lb to cover such events and as long as the truck itself isn't overloaded would pass being pulled over.
Hope I haven't confused you any more. :-)

In the cool still quite of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
Thank you all very much for all of your help. I will go with the Edelbrock 600. I've never had any problems with them in the past on my Chevys, but then everything else fell apart around it. Thanks again.
