i have a 75 f 100 with a 203 transfer case i do not now if it has been converted to a part time. but i am have a kinda growl when am not under power .but goes away when i put in to hi lock not sure how long the truck was driven with hubs unlocked they looks after market. not sure what to do
It could be deeper into the T-case. The NP203 wasn't designed to be ran 2wd. So from what I have heard, they can dry up if they aren't put into 4wd every 500 miles or so.
I still say it's either a U-joint or a hub. Either way fairly cheap and easy.
As for what is the difference between the 2 t-cases, about 18" in length and 200 lbs. The 203 is a monster. It's almost as long as a C6 transmition, weighs about as much too. I believe earlier in this thread we discussed shift patterns, those are different. Also the 203 has a Blue "LOCKED" light under the dash by the shifter when it's shifted into the locked position (that is if it's still there).
I have one in my 76 and messed up the dif, inside it by running hubs on the front, it will only move if you have it in 4 wheel lock, but get the part time kitfor it, I had mine rebuilt, bout 10 years ago, with the part time kit and have not had any probs with it. I was trying to put a 205 behind the trans when the 203 quit, but have the longer output shaft on the trans, so was stuck with the 203, not sure what adapter it takes but good luck
