sorry for the little amount of info in my first post. I put new battries in about 2 months ago. the guage works about half of the time, the other half it reads like the ignition is off. It is the factory voltage guage. thanks .

Well it's not a fuse then. I think the gauge gets it's signal off the voltage regulator. Probably need to start there and chase wires until you find the broken/shorted one....unless it's in the circuit board as bigred suggested. It just sounds to me like it's a wire that experiences some movement.
Accoring to the blueprint the wire is a lt.grn-red which runs direct from the alternator to the gauge cluster. Check for corrosion on the alternator connection first or loose connection. Also check the wiring going thru the firewall.
lt. green stripe red wire is the ignition circuit from the key switch to the engine.
It goes to a lot of stuff like the IP, timing advance solenoid, high idle solenoid, glow plug relay and a host of other things.
Since the truck is running and apparently the rest of the accessories are working correctly I would first look under the dash for loose wires or connectors. Also the ground connections may need attention.
