Diesel engines

I'm looking into diesels. Thinking of a diesel F250 for a recreational puller. I like having more power than really necessary, as evidenced by my 400 cid F150 daily driver.

What's the baddest deisel engine going, relative to trailer pulling? What does it cost? What are the runner ups and their cost?

Thats a matter of opinion, Need more info like new or used and how much are you willing to pay. But i'm kinda partial to a 7.3 from 95-97 or 01-02 I would be glad to help if you give that info

Let's see... non computer controlled if at all possible. Used most likely. It will probably get dropped into a 73-85 F250. In short, dirt cheap. The last truck I bought for $500. It's now a mechanically sound daily driver($2700 more) and only needs paint and some interior work.

You say a "recreational puller" what weight are you pulling? I figure the max pull no matter how often. Because you might want to do something BUT you are maxed out on the flats and the other half wants to tow a RV over the hills (6% grades) and is disappointed that you have to make a very long detour to please them.

I've done that and it is very frustrating and hard on the vehicle when underpowered to do the job. I tow a 9000# trailer several times a year and just drive our 04 to and from work the rest of the time. Yes it is quite an investment BUT when you need the power it is there to use. My PSD gets 15-20 MPG depending on how fast I'm going and towing about 12 from Michigan to Florida on I-75.

The motor cost is about 5K more but well worth it.

No computer and that year of a truck I would suggest doing a 12v Cummins transplant.

diesel and cheap typically do not go together, and if they do, there is usually a good reason. I did manage to pick up an 84 extended cab 2wd, 6.9 4 speed, for $350 but the seller thought the engine was locked up, courtesy of the local dealership... it was more the starter was bad, and the truck had sat for a while. Pull started it, and it runs just fine. Replaced the starter and it now is a regular runner. But generally, a diesel can pull over $1000 if it runs at all. Cummins motors are far from cheap as well. Price tag wise, you're better of chasing a 6.9 or 7.3 IDI motor.

I'm looking in the $3000 for a good running truck, if it has a diesel, extended cab, long bed and manual trans. Trailer weight I don't know yet. I'm thinking about getting a good puller then staying under that limit. Do the 88-93 F250/350's have any engine electronics?

Why are the cummmins so popular? How do they differ from the 7.3 IDI motor?

More power, the 7.3IDI while it is a good engine, is just down on the HP compared to the Cummins.

Coming out of a junk yard I would doubt if you see much difference in the price of a 7.3IDI and a 5spd or a 5.9 Cummins and a 5spd. Having never done it though I can't guarantee that.

Also there are companys out there that make kits to install the Cummins in the years of truck you are talking about.

I'm leaning towards just buying a 88-93 F250 or F350 now. A lot less fuss, muss and cash. When the engine dies I can look into replacing it with whatever. Anyone have power specs for a 90ish 7.3IDI and a 90ish 5.9 cummins? Is the cummins already turbocharged?

According to www.bankspower.com

1990 7.3IDI Stock With Banks Turbo
Horsepower, best gain 176 hp (3000 rpm) 260 hp (3000 rpm)
Torque, best gain 360 lb-ft (1400 rpm) 503 lb-ft (1500 rpm)
Towing speed 6% grade 47 mph (2nd gear) 72 mph (3rd gear)

1990 5.9 cummins Stock With Banks Turbo
Horsepower, best gain 150 hp (2200 rpm) 220 hp (2200 rpm)
Torque, best gain 355 lb-ft (1200 rpm) 595 lb-ft (1200 rpm)
Towing speed 6% grade 47 mph (4th gear) 68 mph (5th gear)

The 7.3, allegedly?, has more stock HP by 26hp and more stock torque by 5ft/lbs. Are these numbers correct?

i used to pull a 17,000lb machine on a 3,000lb trailer with my 88 7.3 5 speed with banks turbo. the only problem i had was with really steep grades, i had to downshift to third gear. most of the time it was drop 1 gear on hills or bridges.

but i also had open stacks, and a juiced pump, it was pushing 315 hp.

I don't think these numbers are right. My '90 7.3 with a 4.10 would only go 55mph in 3rd gear against the govenor. Maybe the truck had an auto in it. The Cummins had a turbo stock.

my 88 4X4 with the 5 speed and 4.10 gears would top out at 85 mph.
now with the C6 trans, it will still do 85, but i have increased the tire size to 36 inch.

oops. i just reread that and realized what i read. yes, the banks info is with an auto trans, not manual.

Mine would top out around 110-115 but my governor was turned up a bit (around 36-3700 if I remember right).

85 is about right with a C-6 a friend of mine has one everything stock with a C-6 and it will run 78mph.

My 86 with 4 speed tops out at 77, that's with 235/85 tires. The price trouble if you do a conversion to a Cummins isn't just the motor, but if you keep the Ford trans, then the adapter plate is $700, motor mounts if you don't make them are about $300, and then a'c compressor kit is about another $300, and then the drive line has to be reworked a bit because the Cummins is a bit longer, so it isn't just the motor, but the parts to install it. Wiring on the 1st gen and pre powerstroke IDI motors are the same, simple.
