E350 turn signal / Brake problem

My neighboer has a 98 E350 Powerstroke cargo van.

The drivers side rear turn signal and brake light doesn't work.
Its not the light, I just replaced light assembly...
I used a test light and traced the wires all the way forward to the big connector under the drivers firewall, I can put on hazards and find the passenger side, but I cant find the drivers side... no blinky, blinky

drivers front signal flashes really fast, I thought maybe it could be the signal relay or maybe a fuse, but we cant find the owners manual and I have no idea where or what to look for on these vans... I searched the forums with no luck.

any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hmmm, on the VW's that I work on if the turn signal is going too fast on one side like that it's always one of the bulbs is burned out, or an incorrect bulb has been installed.

I've got the wiring diagrams at home on DVD, but it will be 7:00 tonight before I can look. Hopefully someone else can find it for you before then. I will post again when I get a chance to look.

Technitom,
Here is what I can see on the diagram I have for a 98 E-350. Starting at the tail light you should have a blackwire (going to ground) and a light green/orange wire. This one should go to a black connector with 7 wires near the drivers seat belt retractor. Light green/orange is the # 1 wire in this connector(top right on the male connector). From here it goes to the right (passenger) side kick panel. Along this stretch there is a splice that goes to the engine comp fuse panel(fuse #6, I think)and then to the trailer camper adapter if you have that option. Behind the kickpanel there is a black 16 pin connector. the lg/o wire is pin #10 close to the middle of the connector. Next it goes to a connector on the base of the steering column(I think, the diagram is not real clear). This is another black 16 pin connector. The lg/o wire is #10 again. From here it goes to the connector on the multifunction switch(on steering column). This time it is pin #9. I am going to try to save some schematics drawings and trouble shooting charts in my gallery. This may take me a little while, so if you look and it is not there yet, check back in a little while.
Hope this helps,
Craig

just thought of something else. the wirw going to the rear is seperate from the one going to the front. They splice inside the multi-function switch. The problem could be a bad switch.

Do those vans have a third brake light (up top in the middle). If so might be worth while checking that bulb out. I ran into a problem somewhat similar to this before and it turned out to be the third brake light was bad.

Good luck

Believe it or not i have 98 E350 cubevan that dose the same thing every once and a while but on the passenger side. Front light flashes quick but no dash or rear signal. If i hold the switch just before the spot it clickes on it works fine. Try just holding the switch down with your finger but don't push it all the way down. Let me know if it works for you. I think its in the switch itself. Bad contacts or something.

doreilly, according to the ford schematic the 3rd brake light is on another circuit.
I agree with lancer. I think it is probably in the switch itself. It looks like the multifunction switch actually contains two little switches for each side. Front one is working back one is not. I added the schematics to my gallery.
