Hey guys, whats up? I had my check engine light on for about a week and a half on my 98 f150. it has 135,372 miles on it and it's a 5.4L V8. Well, i took I took it to Midas since it's right behind my office. They told me the oxygen sensor on the right side was the one that is malfunctioning. since it was right below my ac. He was surprised i had gone this long without a problem since they were stock. Anyways, my question is 'how much should I expect to pay for new sensors?'
Midas quoted me 155.22 each. Way too much if you ask me.
also...
is one brand better than the next? or should i just go with the cheapest one that I find?
thanks
I agree with Projectsho. The stock O2's are Bosch and the Autozone in my area sells them for between $55-65 per sensor. If you're local Midas (etc) are replacing them you should expect a 20% increase on parts, as at most shops, plus no more than 2 hours labor to replace all 4 (very conservative etimate, should be about an hour). If you were to have all 4 replaced and there is no reason why you should, you shouldn't expect to pay no more than $470 total, plus applicable taxes.
If you plan on driving this (or selling it to one of us) don't go with the cheapest. From a parts perspective (and my buds working in a parts environment) cheap parts are usually that!
I'd stick with the Bosch, they've aways treated me well in my foreign cars and they're stock for the Fords.
Just a suggestion, and this is for if your downstream o2s are bad, and this is for if you do not have emissions tests where you live. Go to http://www.rpmoutlet.com/gmo2s.htm , these are o2 senor simulators and are like $60 shipped to your house, COULD be a lot cheaper than buying OEM oxygen sensors...Al you do is hook these up inbetween your sensor and connector and POOF, problem solved. Just my 2 cents though
alright guys, i finally got the p code for my truck. I went to my local autozone and got it done as a freebie (wish i knew this before i paid midas $90, oh well ive and learn). the code came out as P0171 systme too lean (bank 1). Now what exactly does this mean? i tried to do some research on it but i felt that i wasnt getting a definite answer, some were saying that it might be a vaccum leak. based off of the code what are the things that i should be looking for?

Bank one refers to one side of the V vs. the other. Bankone is the passenger side bank 2 is the driver side. all you need is a 7/8 wrench to replace the part. Just did all 4 of mine last night in under an hour. Autozone will also rent you a scoket that will make it a little easier. It technically does not cost anything you pay $15 and get it back when you return the tool.
