Engine miss, CEL, and code P0301

2000 F150 5.4 auto 4x4 supercab 76000 miles

I've been getting an engine miss every once in a while on startup that usually goes away after the truck is warmed up. It's been very cold here lately and it pretty much missed all day yesterday.

I've figured that something was wrong with the ignition but haven't really gotten around to screwing with it. Finally, the CEL came on yesterday and I got code P0301. I looked it up and it's Cyl 1 misfire.

I have every reason to believe that it has the original plugs and coils. I think that it's the coil as from my experience plugs either work or don't.

My plan of action is this-
-8 new plugs
-8 COP tune up kits (the contact springs and rubber boots)
-1 New coil

I know that this engine is picky about plugs. I know that Motorcrafts are good. How about Autolites? I plan to use an aftermarket coil.

Anything else?

Mike

That sounds about right. Make sure to use dilectric grease on the boots.

Autolite or Motorfcraft will work fine as long as they are double platinum.

Thanks for the quick reply. Are you saying use the grease on the outside of the boots or on the inside like where you would put it in wires.

Inside where the boot goes over the spark plug to help keep moisture out.

Well I only changed the coil as it's freezing outside and the same symptoms are still there. I guess it is the plug. Hope I can return the coil. The one I pulled out looked almost brand new. The boot and spring is in perfect condition.

I guess it could be the injector, but the exhaust seems to smell like excess fuel when it's missing. Now that I'm paying more attention to it, it also feels like there is a very slight miss once warmed up.

Mike

Edit: I may dumb. Is cyl 1 on the driver's side rear of the engine or the pass front?
