Another towing report

Had a chance this weekend to tow my new Jayflight 28FKS travel trailer. It's almost 30' long and weighs 7500 pounds (weighed it) Truck and trailer wt is 15,000 pounds. Prolly a little more since I didn't have firewood and other goodies when I got it weighed. Anyways, the destination was Roosevelt Lake approx 120 miles from my home. There were several 6% grades, one of which was several miles long. I was able to maintain 65mph, the posted speed limit the whole way. On the grades, I had the pedal to the metal running 4200rpms at 65mph. My mpg was 6.6. I'm sure if I had the 4.30 gears it would have been better. With the taller gears the rpm's would have been a tad higher and I would have had to use less throttle to keep moving. All in all the truck did it's job and let me tell ya I had that BSEG! at the top of that hill!!!

Nice trailer. I have a 28' 10" Cougar 5th wheel that I pull. I have puled a 26 ft bumper pull with my 99 f250 5.4 and the Cougar 5th. The 26 ft. moved around quite a bit on me with the wind and passing trucks. The 5th doesn't move much at all. Towing was around the same considering the weight difference (5500 to 7000). I now own a 2001 250 V10, have not towed yet. Can I expect better gas mileage if I drive the same speed 60-65? I was getting around 7 with the 5.4 on level gound. It was difficult to maintain 60 on grades, usually dropped to 55 alot on gentle grades. Truck hardly cruised on OD. Will the V10 cruise on OD pulling the Cougar at around 60-65?

It should pull in OD on flat land. Mine does and I use cruise on flat land too. They will both shift out of OD on the slightest hill.

V10man - I have not been to Roosevelt for a year or two, looks to be in better shape since last time I was there.

I have a 30' travel trailer and full weight of the trailer is about 9200lbs. My 03 F250 4x4 V10 tow's pretty pretty well on flat freeway but the rpm's really climb when there is any hill's I can't get it above 45 mph going up the Grape Vine but that is a very steep - long grade. My 34 ft class A motorhome didn't do any better with a 460 and 513 gears. I didn't weigh the truck/trailer combo but it is close to what you are towing. I get about 7mpg towing now but might get better when I get more miles on the truck (only 10k miles now). The problem is trying to stop that much mass in traffic. 55mph rpm is about 2200 at 65mph it's about 2700 in O.D.

when i first got this combo, towed this unit @ 400 miles on the truck, got 18!!!! cdn mpg, now after the infamous re-call/re-flash just got back from a 400 mile round trip, a whopping 11 mpg`s, averaging 55 mph, but still like the mortage on wheels.. just not enough to keep it. truck and unloaded rv, 19500. lbs. 4 people, 2 chichua`s, 1/2 cord of wood, 90 gals h20, 20500 lbs.
