Valve clatter
I bought a sweet little '98 f150 mid last year with only 25k miles from original owner. It has the 4.2L V6 and a 5spd tranny. It is my first f150 and I like it alot. Only prob though is valve clatter when I am runnin' at just about any speed once it is warmed up. Tried different octanes of gas but no help. This truck is like brand new and it is a really irritating thing. I also hear a strange "ticking" noise and it sounds like it is coming from under the dash but I have not found anything loose under there that could possibly create the sound (it is intermittent). I am sorry for being so lengthy but I would appreciate anyone's help with these issues. Thanks alot!!
You might try cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor by spraying some electrical contact cleaner on the wire filiments. Don't touch them, just spray them down. If dirty, it can cause a lean condition and detonation.
Could the ticking be a relay?
