unfortunately sir they do chev and gm both have 1/4 tons they are the colorado and the canyon but AHEM ranger blows em away
i believe drb was pointing out the fact that the other manufacturers have moved to midsize trucks like the canyon, frontier, and dakota. the ranger is now the only compact pickup available, to my knowledge. if the ranger is cancelled/upsized, the only compact left will be the upcoming jeep gladiator.
I saw a new sporttrac going down the highway...looks like a modified explorer...got the same rear end as the explorer....I'd much rather have a solid rear axle. It looked pretty good though....just useless IMHO
Well from what I have read here in this Thread i'm with you guys about alerting Ford to what the consumer wants not necessarily what is best for the Executives. Even though I don't own a Ranger my friend does 2001 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Black, I love that truck freaking awesome. I want a Diesel Ranger.
you know, its too bad. a fully loaded ranger is pretty pricey for what it is. a compact truck! a co-worker picked up a brand new f-150 King-Ranch fully loaded with custom hard bed cover and nerf-bars from the dealer with ext. warranty at the end of the model year '05 for $35k out the door! now that may be about $10k more than the ranger but a stripped down version must be cheep as heck. by the way the Ranger is the ONLY compact out there. the colorado, dakota, so on, are not.
i do wish they would give us a 4 cyl diesel though.
I like my 2.3 but I would be first in line for a diesel ranger (Ford made a diesel ranger back in the 80's when gas prices were high didn't they?)
I am a huge fan of having a truck that gets good milage like my ranger. although my stripped out 2wd 4cyl Ranger isn't the most manly truck on the road, I cringe at the thought of driving a car.

Big Bear 1, just slap a 4 inch lift kit, a set of 31:10-50's, and a detroit tru-trac,with 4:56 gears, and it will be manly enough. The pre-runner look is in, maybe even a couple of decals. It will look good on road, be decent off road, and still get good mpg. That's what is so great about the ranger, it's so versitle. From the the plain jane to the xlt, they can be custumized to fit each owners wants, like's and personality. They look good lifted, slammed, off roaded, street modded, raced, the possobilities are endless!
I would maybe consider buying a F100 if they decided to bring it back, but only if it had a 300 straight 6 in it. I owned a '81 F100 and you couldnt kill that truck.
If they do discontinue US manufacture of the Ranger we could see the models sold in S. America and Asia-4 banger Diesel and 4 doors!
Ford Brasil and Ford Thailand both make true 4 door cabs with 6 ft beds and offer 4 cylinder diesels and E85/E80 fueled engines. I drove the 4 door model in Brasil (2.5 liter I4 totally Ethanol powwered motor) and found it a nice ride. I did not get a chance to slide underneath and chek the chassis but you can assume they would have to beef up the chassis to meet N American Safety specs. My cousin is presently on duty for a 3 letter agency in Thailand and I'll ask him in my next email if he can give me any FB on the Asian model (also sold in Australia since its RHD).
Ford doesnt care about the ranger!!! Comeon guys its obvious. You mean to tell me that a 4.0 SOHC V-6 CAN ONLY PRODUCE 207 HORSE....WEAK VERY WEAK. Anyone who is smart will cross the ranger off a shopping list if they do any homework. Truth is the mid-size offerings are well ahead of Ranger in every catagory, and smart folks see that, ranger sales are in the toilet. I love the ranger too but the fact of the matter is it cannot continue life in its current state.

The Ranger is the last true compact pickup. For some of us this is a GOOD thing. Since I don't need the extra capability of a mid-size pickup, I'd rather not haul around all that extra steel, and deal with parking. (Where I work, there are some parking spaces that my Ranger clears with literally inches to spare; if it were any bigger, I have to park outside of the garage more often...)
why do you need more than 200 hp in a compact pickup? thats why they make 1/2 & 3/4 tons. with the right gearing a 2.3 will work for most. if i needed more out of my (old pushrod 160 hp ) 4.0 id change out my 3.73s for 4.10s
