Anyone with information regarding the reassembly of king pins into axle spindles?
I pulled the spindles off my 77 F100 Shorty (part of the frame off project) and found a grease seal inside the spindle casting, a little rough for it's age I thought it best to replace it. Inside the casting, both above and below the I-Beam, there appears to be a 'seat' for this seal to sit in, yet all the after market kits ship with only one per side. Local Ford Dealers suggest the seal goes in the top section next to the I Beam, but can't explain why the casting appears to require two on each side. The seal is a small steel ring with a rubber seal inside.
Thanks for any help.
G'day Rick
Havn't done my front end yet. (Only a matter of time.)
So I can't give you a direct answer.
However if you feel it needs a second seal take one of the ones you have to a bearing suppliers and get the extra's.
Provided they don't alter any clearance I can't see them causing a problem.
For what It's worth my 79 F100 2wd has grease nipple's top and bottom of the king pins so I would expect it to have seals at both ends
I just did the kingpins on my '74 F100 tonite and according to my Ford manual, there are only 2 seals, and they go in the spindle, underneath (bottom of ) the top bushing.
