I posted this question on the Y block forum but have not received an answer as of yet.
This may be a dumb question, but how do you remove the drive assembly from the starter motor shaft? My starter is shot but the drive assembly seems OK. I see a pin through the end of the shaft but the "collar" partially covers the pin. This is for a 1962 F350, 292. I have a shop manual for the 62, but it in hiding at this time !!!

I just replaced my complete starter and it came as a complete assembly.
Is there a reason why you want to remove it?
If the starter is shot I would think that the drive is not to far behind it. I would recomend a complete replacement.
Hey bobf1 can you do me a favor and post a picture of the complete starter drive assembly and all, I need to see if I picked up the right one from a donor truck. I've never done one of theses starters before and have not pulled mine apart yet. a picture worth looking at for me.
thank you
Robert

From looking at NAPA's site it seems to come without the drive. Where did you get yours?

I can do that, but it might be a few days before I can do it.
Bob, if I remember right, at the end of the shaft there is a pin going through the shaft, at the wnd of the drive unit there should be a spring loaded collar over the pin. pull back on the collar and take out the pin and the shaft will slide off.

KEEP THE DRIVE!!!!!! its always useful to have a spare one BELIVE ME, anyways, the whole drive assembly can be pushed down and the pin will just slide out, BUT you need alot of force to puch it down enough to ge the pin out.
I picked up the starter on Friday from NAPA it did come without the drive. To remove the drive, as suggested by others, the front collar must be pushed back to remove the pin. It took quite a bit of force. I have a big woodworking vise so I put the starter in it to push on one side of the collar and a big clamp on the other side so that I could push it evenly, then drove the pin out. I just reversed the operation to put the drive on the new starter. I put the starter back in and it started right up.

Thanks for all the input.

Good luck i had starter trouble for 3 months, i ended up getting used starter drives and rebuilding them because i couldnt get one. and because new starters dont come with them. but macs antique auto does sell the starter drive.
i to used a woodworking vise to pull the ring down and get the pin out
I realize that this is an old post, but I'm doing this today and checked here for a reference. Just an update; I got a new starter from Napa and it does not include the drive ($87). Kragen lists a starter for $87 w/o the drive, and $130 w/drive. Autozone told me that they couldn't even get it, but lists a rebuild kit. My insulation appears to be shot though.
