i have a 81 f-100 that i'm replacing the 302 in. i thinking about putting in a 351, and i'm not sure of what changes i'll have to make. any help would be welcome
Put in another 302. 351w's are highly overated, especially on this site. There is alot more parts availible for the 302 and can easily make more power than a 351w. I you plan on pulling a stump out of the ground, sure, get the 351, if you want performance, get an 88 or so HO 5.0 and put a carb on it. Youll smoke most things out on the road, an f-100 doesnt need any torque to get moving, its a light truck, the 302 revs higher than a 351 and will have the power when you need it with the right gears.
If you are swapping in a 351W, all you should need to change in the truck is the exhaust hookup to the manifolds/headers. The 351 has a taller deck height, so the pipe may need to be lengthened to reach up a bit higher. Make sure the 351 has the correct oil pan to go in your truck, as the 302 pan will not fit a 351.
I was just at O'Rielys asking about rebuilt engines to replace my 351W HO. A long block out the door was just over a grand not including the $310 core charge. Comes with a full gasket set. I added a new water and fuel pump, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, sensors and sending units, oil pan (long block doesnt have one and my old one is beat up) oil, oil filter, and a few other nick nack stuff and with the core charge came out to just over $1700. Not too bad of a deal I dont think. Might wanna check them out or a similar store in your area.
