1985 F-150 Fuel? Problems
I was hoping to get some opinions on a problem I am having before I bring it in to the mechanic.
I have a 1985 F-150 with low mileage that has been acting up. It started out as a problem when I was accelerating or making turns. As I would give it gas the engine would start to stall out (flood?) and I would have to push the accelerator very lightly to keep going. I would eventually get up to speed but could not get the truck over around 60-65 mph and the ride was rough. I should mention that this problem seemed to start fairly suddenly and I do not drive this vehicle every ofter (weekly maybe and have only driven a few times since the problem was observed).
I thought maybe the gas was bad so I filled up my second tank and the truck seemed to run great. However, the next time I took the truck out I realized I was using gas so fast I could practically see the gauge going down (ended up around 6 mpg as opposed to my usual 11 mpg). Also, performance was somewhat shaky at first, improving as the truck warmed up, but started to fall apart as I got to about 1/4 tank on the gauge. I filled up the same tank and the peformance did not improve right away, but after about 5 miles and stopping for an errand the truck started up and operated great. However, the gas gauge is once again dropping when I drive.
Not being a mechanic I have postulated that the problem seems fuel pump related. A coworker (and former owner) thought it might be carborateur or tank related. I would appreciate any suggestions .
Thanks, Adam B.
Good luck.
