I have replaced most systems on my '89 "keeper" van. I have never had a 351W, so I'm not sure how good it should pull/run. The problem i'm experiencing is slight shutter when accelerating. I hadn't noticed it until I installed a new cat. It might have been there since the rebuild of the top-end, but it's hard to tell. The old cat was hollow so the result was like an expansion chamber on a motor cycle Xs2 in a van.
I replaced a dead injector, replaced the EGR and it's sensor twice, rebuilt dizzy, replaced plugs and wires twice. (Autolite) replaced coil, cleaned out IAC. rebuilt the alt with new reg at the same time. Replaced the fuel injector pressure reg and two fuel pumps, rear and rail. Vehicle speed sensor, and probably a few other things that don't come to mind off-hand.
I did the numbers for my gas milage for the last 2 thousand miles and came up with 10.5MPG. I do most of my driving empty and at around 40-50, semi around major roads and some town. The numbers I see/hear about are 14 to 16 MPG.
I'm not sure where to look now. I just pulled the codes, and nothing comes up unless I'm wrong, I have an old blinking unit, so I might be pulling a 22 or 11 in the memory, hard to tell.
when the new cat was installed did they put the heat shield back on? if not it may be heating up the tranny lines. hows your tranny fluid? check your vacum modulator for the C6 also. if its not working right it may cause this as well. the last time you pulled plugs how did they look
I installed the cat and its heat shield. The last time I pulled the plugs, number 4 was fouled. That was the injector that was dead and replaced. I replaced all the plugs wires, roter and cap then, about 2k mi ago.
The stutter is engine/tune related not in trans. The idle is somewhat rough, it seems to lope on idle, sounds like it cycles,"Vrooom, Vrooom, Vrooom, Vrooom."....etc. then doesn't accelarte smoothly, hence the stutter.
i would check timing. should be set to 10* btdc with spout connector removed. i would then check the tps voltage to make sure its in the proper range. that web site will give tell ya the range it needs to be in.
OK,
I looked on the Fordfuelinjection web site, but I'm not sure how to go about testing the tps voltage. I have a voltage meter but what should I be looking for? The 5v going in and the 1.8v comeing out?
Unless somehow the dizzy moved, it still should be at 10*btdc with spout off. But I will check when I'm in there again looking at the tps.
Kemicalburns,
I found a website that explained how to check the tps, it is OK. I checked the timeing just to be sure, and Its OK. However I did find a bad Check Valve on my Secondary Air System and replaced it. It runs better now. Thanks.

Kemicalburns,
Can you tell me where the vacum modulator is? Is the C6 the three speed auto in "89? When shifting into third under steady mild power, she bucks. It feels like she's shifting back into second, and then back up into third,, a couple of times real fast. This just started. The previous problem was a dead injector, again. Thanks for the help.
not sure were exactly but it runs off of engine vacum so follow the vacum line routing. and look in your haynes manual it should show it. glad you got the other things worked out.
