Hello all. How do I disable the door ajar chime on a '96 Ranger? On earlier model Fords, I would just disconnect the wiring harness at the chime. This is different; disconnecting the harness also disables the windshield washer switch and washer. I would guess it is activated through the door latch, as there is no push button switch in the door jamb.
thanks in advance Bill
the obvious. it goes off everytime the door is opened. it is an obnoxious safety feature the government has deemed necessary. Thanks NTSB, but I can tell when my door is closed. it's better than the buzzer Ford used in the '80's-but not much.
Okay, I don't know if this was the same after they redesigned the interior ('95?), but on my '89 and '91 Rangers, it was an easy fix. You remove the two screws holding the steering columb shroud on, pop them apart, and remove the singe wire connector from the ignition switch assembly and lay it aside. replace & secure covers.
The seat belt buzzer is also easily defeated by disconnecting it under the seat.
These two fixes will (hopefully) retain your "headlights-on" reminder while stopping the really annoying ones.
Bill,
I replaced my turn signal assy. a couple years ago on my '99 While I had the plastic off the column, I remember(accidentally or not) removing a wire under the key. It disabled the door chime. It no longer chimes when the door is open and key in ign. The chime still works if i leave the lights on an try to leave my truck. It's been so ling thats all I can recollect... I really like it that way.
good luck, jim.

Oh thank God!! I thought they had changed it and I was gonna be stuck with that stupid key-in-ignition chime. I hadn't had a reason to pop the cover off and look for myself yet. Guess what's getting unplugged tomorrow!!!

The only problem I ever had with this was that it then disabled the headlights-on warning too, which I found to be worthwhile.

I took rebturtle's advice and disconnected the wire to the switch. It still chimes when the engine is running, and the door is opened, but does not with the key in stop or with it removed; Think I can live with that Thanks to all. Bill
The only sure way to get rid of the chime is to remove it from the card it's on. I did it on 2 of our Rangers at work (97's) before I did it to my 03 at home. I'm like you bill1958, I can't stand to listen to the darn thing ding when my door's open. I know when my key's in the ignition and I don't need to be reminded! What I did (and this is only for someone with a little experience with printed circuit boards) was to remove the radio, take the circuit board,on the left side of the radio opening, (it's in a black plastic container) out and very carefully unsoldered the chime from the board. Haven't heard a peep sense!!
