I was playing in the snow yesterday in my 72 f-100. I rebuilt the 360 about a year ago. Was running great, then just stopped running. Rotor is not turning, and rocker arm assembly not rocking.
I have not had a chance to haul it home to take a look. What most likely happened? Can you snap a cam in half??
If you put a wrench on the crankshaft cap nut. spin it around, and the rocker arms don't move, sounds a lot like the timing chain kit to me. It could be one of the cheap $20.00 timing chain sets and you stripped out the gears or snapped the single link chain.
I agree with broken timing chain and or gear. The stock sets are sad as are quite a few aftermaket sets. If you rotate the crank(disconnect battery first, and use appropriate socket with care) and the valvetrain doesn't move or distributer, put money on the chain or gears. If you weren't over revving , and it is a brocken chain or gear, you will probably be ok. Good luck! Jamie
has to be timing chain, as the valve train would still work if the distributor gear pin sheared. crank key slipped out ? Cam chain gear drive pin out of position. ?
I agree it's most likely in the timing chain or gear. I have seen cams break in other motors before but never and FE. If it broke right at the gear then you'd loose both the distributer and valve train. I seriously doubt this is what happened though. Either way you're going to have to pull the front of the engine down. Did the timing chain gear have plastic teeth?
If you mistakenly got a soft metal keeper on the drive shaft nose for the timing gear, it may have shiered...and what you all said about the chain ,When you pull the timing cover, will you upgrade any thing while you're there?
I am hoping for something easy.... I will be hauling it home when the snow melts off.
About the over reving scenario, I'm afraid to admit that might be the case. When I get her fix I will be more careful. I did take a look under that valve covers and all looks fine there. I will give you all an update when I tear it down.
I will be bringing it home Thurday after work, and breaking it down Saturday morning. Depending on whats wrong I may go ahead an fix it. If its major I will wait. But I will give you all an update as soon as I know something.
Got it fixed, and running great. When I rebuilt the engine I thought to myself what keeps this pin from coming out? But never acted on my thought. Until now that is. I feel like an idiot...... But no damage done.
