My 89 ranger 2.9 oil prressure took a dump. as a result had to swap in a low milage 2.9 from a 88 Braonco ii.
When I got the truck back from my buddy the mechanic, I noticed theat up by the throttle body cable on the drivers side there is some type of vacumm connection that is not connected. The part in question is just behind the snow schield on the left. It has three connections for hoses. Mine has a lage nsulated hose coming from the bottom of the motor. The other two fittins are not conncected. When the truck is running there is a steady flow of air comming out of one of the openings.
My buddy tells me it is not needed and not to worry about it.
What is this thing. What does it do, or what is it supposed to do. Do I need it??
Do you have any way to take a pic of this mystery part and post it here? It sure doesn't sound familiar to me, my '89 Ranger 2.9 has nothing like that.
But if you Ranger didn't have it originally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You could just remove it and use whatever parts you need from the Ranger's original engine to restore it to the Ranger's original configuration.

What gets me is that the vacuums are blowing out of the openings...
Sounds like the insulated tube could be EGR? But 88+ didn't have EGR... The 3 hoses on the bottom of the throttle body go in this order from left to right looking at the front of the engine.
PCV Valve on passeng (Big). Valve Cover, Carcoal Canister in front drivers side of truck (small), and Breather on Drivers Valve Cover (big). Other than that I am a bit confused.... Definately post a pic if possible.
I looked at my '87, and that sure sounds like the EGR valve. Are you certain that '88 engine isn't really an '87?
In any case, your '89 doesn't need an EGR system, so basically you just need to effectively remove the EGR system (plug the vacuum leaks and such) on the new engine.
Thanks for the help. have plugged up the hoses. With lick I can keep this old girl on the road for many more years. My 89 may not be the prettiest girl on the block, but I still love her.
