Yeah, panic, get those universals replaced. Mine has been quite smooth if FWD, and I'm running 29" BFG ko's. I have the new heavy duty rear drive shaft in now, so it is out to the Badlands soon.
I'll worry about that when... oh, that's right... I'm going to be doing a solid axle swap, so why spend the hours and $$$ on replacing the u-joints / half shafts... heh. It does just fine, mostly it's on pavement that this happens, which isn't too unusual... although, my 2004 'Yota Tacoma doesn't do it as bad haha. I may recondition the D28 a little, though. Even if it's just a matter of getting it lubricated and the kinks worked out
I'm also waiting on spending the $$$ for the 'new' double-cardan u-joint style rear driveshaft until after I get things together to do the rear axle/suspension. It'll be an ongoing project whenever there is time and $$$. When I really get started and dive in with both feet I'll have to post a new thread
bottom line, theres a good meaning to the term "part time" with 4x4 on trucks. Part time meaning off road, sence you spend more time on one then off it i would assume. so that 4x4 is for the time you need it. Part of the time you drive. It is not designed to perform satisfactorly on dry road surfaces. Full time, or AWD is different though where as the front axle is designed more like a front wheel drive car.
Something realy realy WEIRD happened. I noticed strange sound from the hub which broke. So, after driving I decided to touch it and see if nothing is overheating. Well, I grabed the hub and it was LOOSE. So, I turned it. The hub was turning inside the wheel. Now, if I remember correctly, the hub mounts on the same 5 bolts as the wheel does and goes in between the wheel and disc brake. So, this means that the actual body of the hub broke in two. I am pretty freaked out....
Taking the wheel off tomorrow to look at it(Goddamn it is cold here!)
Check your CV joint I blew one in a simular situation- coming up out of a steep driveway in about 30" of snow on to a dry road. Blew the left CV apart left me with rear wheel drive only.
You mean the half shaft?
Well, you know how you can see the half shafts in the Dana 28? Well, I got the rear end in the snow pile and asked my friend to look at what is spinning. The half shaft going to the left wheel was spinning, the wheel was not. So, I assumed it was a hub. The thing is that the hub SHOULD NOT spin without the wheel in any condition. So, the hubs are definitly out... Ill check the half shaft though when Ill take the wheel off.
Well, I went and took the wheel off. Exactly how I imagined it, the "disc"(the part which goes between the wheel and disc brake, like spacer) and the actuall hub broke. So, the order for new WARN hubs is placed allready
Should we say this is the weakest spot on Bronco II 4x4?
