I'm trying to staighten out the all of the incorrect fixes of the previous owner. Right now I am working on the heating and cooling system, the temp. control valve has been removed so I'm going to put a new one in, does this go inline with the hose connected to the water pump? Also the second heater hose that connects on top of the intake had a tee with a hose looped around and lying in a bracket attached to the choke. The choke also has a heat riser tube coming from the exhast manifold, I would like to eliminate this "extra" heater hose, will the heat riser tube be enough? I live in a warm climate "South Carolina".
Todd, You only have to have a loop from the pump to the heater core and back to the intake. If you didn't need a heater at all, you can make a short loop and keep the water flowing. I don't know if it matters a lot which side that you put your cut off valve in, you are just stopping the flow through the heater core. The link through the carb plate heats the choke in the winter and makes it hot in the summer. I don't use it on either of my trucks. You can use what you feel that you need and block off the rest.

Put the heater control valve in the line from the manifold. This is the "hot" side so you will keep this water from reaching the heater core. In turn, you won't bake in the summer.
