intermittent stall

This is a new one on me....any help would be appreciated....

2000 7.3, 111,000 miles, auto, 2wd, ext cab, short bed. All service up to date as specified in the owners manual.

Warm day (65), about 2 miles from home running 45mph and o/d had not yet engaged (trans too cool yet), engine "misses" twice within about 10 seconds, throws a check engine light but runs fine the rest of the way to work. Shut it off, restarted and everything is fine, no check engine light. No further issues.

A couple days later, cold temp (15 above) about 6 miles from home, o/d engaged, 60 mph one "miss". No check enine light. NO further problems.

Later the same day, noraml temp engine (stilll 15 degress outside), roll up to a stop light...it dies. Hit the key and it fires right back up. No check engine light...no further issues.

I run Phillips diesel fuel, the miss occurred on both sides of a fillup so it's not the fuel. No water in fuel light. I also use DieselKleen winter additive at the rate of 1/4 qt per tankful (29 gal).

I changed the air filter today but the old one really wasn't that dirty (7000 miles on it). Did an oil change about 2 weeks ago. Fuel filter only has about 7000 miles on it too.

Any ideas gang?

loose wire in there somewhere. The code it threw might still be in memory, chech that out first. Then go through the obvious connections and look for a loose one.

It sounds like the CPS is the problem.

i agree with willbd on the cps being the problem but you could have your codes pulled just to make sure

Yeah....I thought cps too from researching but was hoping it wasn't. If it is cps, what's involved and how much $$?

If it is the CPS your best place to pick on up is an International dealer. Cost for International is between $95 to $115 ford is just over $200 and NAPA is $179. Most truck parts are open 7 days a week.

Hopefully it won't quit altogether in this crazy cold (it's 12 outside now going to 2 above, then 29 tomorrow. They say 50 by Thursday! Last Thursday it was 72. Anyway....I think I'll get it to a friend on Monday and have the memory codes scanned, then take it from there.

Thanks for the help.

Interesting....it ran today without fault. I ordered a CPS anyway....$98 and an easy install. Thank God it's running...and pray it will continue until the part comes in!

Only change I made was a new air filter but I can't imagine my old one (which wasn't bad) would cause the truck to "miss" and shut off once at a light. My tach does register when I crank the motor.

That's pretty common with failing cam sensors. It could go on again/off again for weeks before it finally quits...or could quit today. You never know with these things. I wuldn't stry too far from home until the part comes in....then order a second one to keep as a spare in the vehicle.

CPS came today. After reading some of the war stories concerning removal, I was a little concerned. But it was very easy. It took less than 15 minutes! Big screwdriver popped the old one right out, lubed the new one, put it in and presto...no more stalls. Thanks to all on the forum who provided info on this subject.
