The 4.2 wouldn't last in a full-sized truck, especially if you are going to make it work at all. A 4.2 wouldn't be able to pull nearly as well as the 300. There would be too much stress on the engine, shortening the life of the engine. I'd take a 300 any day. Afterall, we're talking about trucks here, not passenger vehicles. That engine has a different purpose.
I'd still take the 300 over a 4.2. I know the roots of where this engine began with the 3.8...and i'd definately rather not ever have another engine decended from that family.

NO joke. The 3.8 family is, well, junk, when compaired to the 300. The 300 is the best gas engine for doing work (for a truck) in the world. I've seen them in everything, from dump trucks to pickups, wheel crushers, wood chippers, even a few race cars. You can not convince me otherwise, lol. A wise man once said a real truck engine has 6 cylinders, all in a straight line, and usually without spark plugs. I agree.
No comparison -300 is a truck/tractor engine -I've pulled many a V8 out of a ditch. I don't think you could do that with many of those engines, unless you were willing to break something.
The 4.2 is better than the 300 in a race. I know someone with it in his mustang and its pretty darn quick. But make no mistake, i don't think the 4.2 has a place in a good work truck. You have to haul dead moose out of the bush. You have to cut 15 loads of birch in the spring, well you know, stuff you need a truck for. If you had to decide which engine to put in your truck, not a car, the only two left in the world, where one is a 4.2, or the other a 4.9. What would you pick?

That has to be a joke. The 4.2 couldnt touch the 300 as a truck motor.
Only thing that makes me think is the numbers. The 4.2 makes better numbers than the 302 did (202 hp & i forget the torque @ 4500rpms), and some guys on here seem to think the 302 is a better truck motor than the 300.
Put up a link to that thread, I've gotta give them my input. Our six is more heavy duty than their six.
