Hey guys, did they ever make a 460 head that had 8 bolts for valve cover? This may be a rather noob question but I'm confused on something. I've searched for pictures and stuff but not finding anything helpful.
I have a 77' F100 or F150 (not sure), Vin says F-100 with 400m. I have a bunch of local guys who swear up and down the motor is a 460. They say it came out of a old lincoln and a certain head for the 460 has 8 bolts for valve cover. I thought all 460's only had 7 bolts. So, I thought I'd ask here to find out for sure. Is there any real goodway to prove to the local people what the motor is? Or are they right? If I'm right, I'd really like to shove it in their face.. lol...
I dont think so. I have a 351m in my 78 f150 with 8 bolts and since the 400m is basicly the same it has 8 bolts as well. Does the motor have the original valve cover on it? Is so there should be an emission sticker on the driver side valve cover if it hasnt deterated over time. Also if you go the jegs.comand click on (Chrome, Billet & Dress-Up) and scroll down to Valve Covers, Breathers & Components and scroll down to Edelbrock Signature Valve Covers and click one the images of the 429 & 460 there the same only so 7 bolts in the valve cover and if you click on the image for the 351m,400m,& 351c you will 8 bolts in the valve cover. You can even check the other valve cover but edelbrock gives you a best pic of the bolt holes. Finally I would have to say it would be a 400 and not a 460. Hope this helps.
Definate ID on 351M and 400 engines, the thermostat housing mounts to the front extension on the block, the fuel pump has the bolts over and under, and the timing cover is a flat steel plate. On the 460, the thermostat housing is on top of the intake manifold, the fuel pump bolts are front to rear, and the timing cover is a large aluminum casting.
