The newer style have plastic arms that stretch out to hold the cups in place securely. I just got one today on ebay myself. The older ones have little rubber flaps on the front and back that do not hold as well.
I have a tan interior but got a grey one for $16 can't complain.
Here are some ebay links with pictures:
My 03 350 has the same type pictured above in the links. They do pretty good, I usually have two 24oz Mt. Dew bottles stuck in them and my cell phone hanging off one of the arms. They are pretty sturdy little cup holders.
So you woudn't need that if you had an 05 or newer SD?
I am not sure when Ford made the switch but I am about positive the 05 has the newer style. My 99 has the older sytle and I have heard the newer ones are better plue my jams up when opening and closing. You should be good to go.
I do not know, I may have to do the paint thing before I bring it down (can't take paint on a plane). I hoping to be able to change the the front trim piece, this new one looks as if it does not have the handle molded into it like mine has. Maybe someone else has tried to swap out the front piece? Can not look at mine now it is a few hundred miles away at the moment.
i was going to just change out the front trim piece on mine also, but the newer style didnt have the removeable screw like the one for my 99 did. so, i just ordered the right color on ebay.... works great compared to the old one !!!
My 02 has the newer style also with the plastic arms. That little tray in the middle is supposed to be an ash tray but I found that my cell phone fits there perfectly.
A can of factory paint is about $10 if you need to change the color.
Well, I did a little research. Someone is selling them on eBay. Their price seems to be the same as Ford parts, over the counter, plus shipping. 2 different sites, fordparts.com, and fordpartsonline.com, show OEM price minus a discounted price, and shipping. It looks like if you add up the numbers, it is close to what you would pay if you walk into the dealer and just buy the part. You also get the correct color.
From my research, it looks like they switched the design in either 2000, or 2001.
I need a new one anyway, as mine pulls right out of the dash when you open it. I will let you know the results when I call the dealer today.
That sounds about right on the year and not a bad price. I see them sell on ebay for over $50 used and shipping. I got one for $16 and shipping and see a few sell for $20-25 but you need to wait. For the few extra $$$ you can have a new one, makes sense.
If you have a 99 or early 2000 everyone says it is worth the upgrade.
