lotta good places in virginia, west of shenandoah national park to keep you away from 98% of the hurricanes that go through there. places like broadway, new market, and timberville are good places to go. they are not far from winchester and harrisonburg, but far enough to get the small town feel.
Central Mn.hunt fish, camp, golf, lakes lots of em,good jobs around, lot of land,You can have camp fires here too.
Col,Mont,Wym,Ido,Nd,Sd,right to the west,(Elk,goat,sheep,Ect)
The problem with the northeast, and specifically upstate New York is one, the humidity. Also the politics of this whole regions is a little less than desireable. I don't know what the taxes are upstate, but I'm sure they are high, given they have to subsidize the rest of the state's needs.
The gun laws are quite restrictive here, and with a new possible Assualt Weapons Ban ( Alot more restrictive), it sounds as if a rifle barelled semi shotgun will be banned. It's not just the gun laws that is forcing me to move, but is just as equal a motivating factor as the other problems I listed in my orriginal post.
Thanks for all the suggestions, keep 'em coming...
Ever think about moving to PA? I'm from Pittsburgh, so only familiar with the western side of the state, but you could move into some suburbs around here, or if you want to be a little further away you could go to somewhere like Butler. Prices are reasonable, girls are...alright, and you can get a decent amount of land.
Southwest Virginia isn't too bad. Taxes are low, reasonable gun laws, good hunting. Depends upon what you do for a living, as far as jobs go. My place down here near Martinsville is about 10 1/2 hours from our place in NY. Check out realtordot com for info on prperties in area which you might be interested.
this is kind of an interesting site, you take their quiz, which asks lots of things about what you like and dislike, and it comes up with a list of places you should live. Interesting that where I currently live come up 6th on my recommendations, and I love it here! http://www.findyourspot.com/
I've done the quiz on that website, and even fine tuned my answers once or twice, Grand Junction, CO always is in the top 5. Here are the other places it listed for me:
Cedar City, Utah
Hendersonville, North Carolina
Moab, Utah
Grand Junction, Colorado
Berea, Kentucky
Maryville, Tennessee
Alpine, Texas
Morganton, North Carolina
Charlottesville, Virginia
Dillon, Montana
Springville, Utah
Paris, Tennessee
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
Clayton, Georgia
Gainesville, Georgia
Bozeman, Montana
Helena, Montana
Hopkinsville, Kentucky
Salida, Colorado
Brevard, North Carolina
Mount Airy, North Carolina
Tooele-Grantsville, Utah
Aiken, South Carolina
Oxford, Mississippi
John, if you came to SW Michigan ( Grand Rapids, Holland, Hudsonville ) you'd find a locality so politically conservative it is beyond decription. Taxes aren't cheap, but they're liveable. Gun ownership, in this area, is just fine with the locals. But what did you mean by a 'fair climate' ? I live here, and I want to leave, becuase it is too hot for me. There isn't enough snow. Too many summer days over 60*F. tell us what you have in mind, weather wise. DF
If I were 28, I would drive OTR and live out of my truck for a few years, saving every bit of money I could. Then I'd go to Baja, CA and open a shack of a shop on the beach and rent beach *****, umbrellas, and sell cold beer to all the touristas.
That findyourspot.com is interesting. I took the quiz, just for giggles. And it came up with:
Mt. Vernon, Wa. (know it well)
Medina, Wa. (Bill Gates likes it there)
Ketchikan, Al. (too remote)
Hendersonville, NC (never been)
Palmer, Al (interesting)
Oak Harbor, Wa (yep, love it there)
Bremerton, Wa. (ditto)
Seward, Al (what's with all the Alaskan towns?)
Clayton, Ga. (hmmmm)
Maryville, Tn. (pretty, but not me)
Boone, NC (ditto)
Walla Walla, Wa (got onions? Palouse is beautiful, though)
Anacortes, Wa (one of my favorite towns on the planet)
Charlottesville, NC (not in this lifetime)
Homer, Al (Alaska again?)
Berea, Ky. (hmmmm)
Wenatchee, Wa (got apples?)
Port Townsend, Wa (got rain?)
Waynesville, NC
Grand Junction, Co. (where have we heard this before?)
Mount Airy, NC (no)
Interesting stuff. I live a few hours away from most of the spots that came up.
