Ok this might be a long story but help is needed. I bought this 77 I had to do alot of work to front end, spendles, break lines, bearings, calipeirs, break booster, the universal joints on the axle, big bucks it added up. Any ways this truck needed tires two,so did that. went to get a front end alignment and the guy there said something was wrong with the steering. Wouldn't turn all the way to left and frame was flexing when he told me to look while he was trying to turn all the way to the left so he could adjust the tie-rod end I guess. Any way he showed me that the steering was modified and that something was wrong. After checking out a few trucks I discovered that my steering was modified and with cross link tie-bars. My pitman arm drops to the center of the truck and connects to the daul stablelizer bar and cross link tie-rod bars that go back to tie-rod ends that connect to the knuckles on each end of the front rear. Well I decided to go back to the origanal steering and got a new steering box. I need lots of other part so if any one knows a few good links to find steering bar and the part that connects to the knuckle and the bar that runs straight accross please post links. Thanks Cookster
They sold me a complete and new steering system that replaces the original power assist (Ford's power steering). This is completely moderized so you won't have to worry about trying to find obsolete components for your steering system.
Super old thread. Does your problem still exist? Sounds like the crossover steering that prev. owner started to do was simply engineered incorrectly. perhaps the relationship between the drag link (bar from the box to the tie rod) was too long, and attached to the wrong place at the tie rod. This would result in a turning radius that is partial to one side. Is your truck lifted at all by any chance? If yes, you may run into the same problem with the factory style steering. Only this time you will make left turns like mad, just no right ones. A good crossover will work better than the factory design. You are (or were) over halfway there. I have a few parts lying around the shop that you may need (much of the factory stuff is rare, and $$$$). If I can help let me know. Hope to see you drivin, again.
being a new user, I didn't notice the post date until after I already replied. I do hope that this information is helpful to others out there. The kit I got for my truck was just recently specially engineered for the Hi-Boy to replace factory power assist
