I REALLY don't want to spend $300 on a new throttle body when the one that I have is perfectly fine.....except for the filth. Is this something that can be sent out for hot tanking? Can I do a WD-40 bath and a brush?
You can clean it yourself, no problem. Some of them say not to clean them as they have a protective coating that's supposed to retard the guck buildup, and that coating can be eaten away with carb cleaner. If you look carefully at the carb cleaner in the parts store, you should see some that's labled carb and throttle body cleaner, it's supposed to be a different formulation that's gentler on that coating.
I have heard of the WD-40 and a soft toothbrush trick, just use on old worn out toothbrush with the softest bristle you can find and go gently. And...I probably don't need to say that you most likely won't want to use that toothbrush on your fangs again!
Here's an old thread with lots of good info about it.

I wouldn't even do that much. Just clear out most of the carbon buildup behind the throttle blades. Don't go at it with too much effort, just get the majority of it off. You don't want to ruin the thing. Totally clean is not the target, the target is just to get most of the carbon off so it breathes correctly. If you clean it too much it'll just make another problem.
