Four questions please.....
On my 1978 F-100 what is the module that is always leaking a black tar like junk on my left inner fender under the hood? If that tar is coming from the module is it time to buy another or shud I wait till I get stranded somewhere?

My wheel and brake drum fell off on the highway a couple days ago in the rain you might know. Took me an hour to find my wheel.. Never did find my brake drum. Anyway, my back plate got flatten and bent enough where I get quite a bit of racket from that area. Has anyone ever experienced this problem and was there any other damage other then the back plate. The junk yard wants 25 bucks for the back plate and $75.00 for he left rear axal, all though it seems ok...[ I removed it to check for straightness] He was the only one open late today so I'll be shopping again Monday.

An awful clang coming from my rear end when shifting from reverse to first. Drive shaft seems to be ok. Could that be a gear in the rear end? Which gear?

Upon checking my brakes I found that only one side of the brake cylinder was operating the brake shoes. After checking under the dust cover of the non operating side I found that it was packed with grime. I bought another and it did the same thing. I then checked the other rear brake with the drum off and that one did the same thing. Am I seeing things or what? A peak under that dust cover and it looked good.
#2. why did the wheel fall off? Did the truck skid to a stop on the backing plate only? If so put on a new plate.
#3. sounds like the input pinion is worn. Or there is no fluid in the rearend and/or the fluid needs changed.
#4 dont know but I also thought both sides moved on a wheel cylinder

66F100s Rule
In the cool still quite of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
Re: Clang in rear end, in addition to those suggestions previously stated, also check condition of carrier bearing and support (if your truck has the double cardan type drive shaft). If the bearing support, which is the rubber that the bearing is mounted in, has shrunk or deteriorated over time, it allows the drive shaft to pop up and down which will intensify any gear noise when going from forward to reverse and back again. Mine cost $35.00 for a new one.
If you wind up getting into the center section of the rear end, another thing to check would be spring pin that holds the spyder gear shaft in position. Its located in the carrier that the ring gear mounts on.
Also, prices mentioned for axle seem steep. Salvage yards around here get $150. for the entire rear end. Mike
