They'll last a long time after they start whining. I've got a 95 F-150 with 311K miles on it with what looks (and sounds) like the original pump. I flushed some fresh type F through when I bought it, and it works fine. The only time I really hear it is maneuvering in the parking lot.
My other 95 F-150 (185K) you can definately hear compared to "quiet" type pumps (Saginaw for example), but it doesn't whine. All Fords with this pump will make some noise. Do a ps fluid flush if you're worried about it, it can't hurt.
