My 79 F-100 2WD has loose calipers on the front disc brakes that "rattle" when I drive over bumps. Is the caliper worn out, or are the "sliders" that tap in to hold the caliper in place worn out? Is there a bolt missing on the caliper that would stop the rattle?
I wedged in a small shim of 0.063" stainless steel between the caliper and slider, and the rattle went away, but I think that this is probably not a good solution?
Should I replace eveything, or just the calipers? The pads seem to have lots of life left, and seem to be wearing evenly.
Anyone had this problem before? The rattle drives me crazy!
I'm not familiar with the brakes on 2wd but it sounds the same as a 4wd. Do you have the small "leaf spring" that goes on top of the slider block? If not these can be picked up at the local parts store.
No, I don't have those "springs" on my calipers, I don't know if the 2WD and 4WD are the same, but I will check at the parts place and see what they say. If I am supposed to have them that would explain why they rattle!
[font color=red size=2]You do need those springs. They are designed to keep the calipers from rattling. Any parts store should carry them. All that rattling 'll drive you nutz.;-)

Ditto on that spring. All Ford single piston, sliding caliper brake systems that I have seen require it to prevent that noise. Also, you can add a squirt of "anti-squeal" compound or blue silicone, your discretion, to the back of the pads to help control any other noises and be sure to maintain proper wheel bearing tension,(torque) to help keep the rotors in line.

Just an update, I have fixed the problem. I got the springs and that seems to have fixed the rattle. Also, put some anti-squeal on the backs of the pads, that helped also,
