I'm not familiar with explorers as I just sold my 92 aerostar. I have a 97 Sport with the SOHC engine in it.. I was running rough and the check engine light was on.. it was a misfire in 1 and 4 cylinder. Tune up solved the problem.. Now when I start the car in the morning or after a cool down period.. and it's cold outside like below 40 the car chugs and barely stays running until it's warmed up for about a minute. On the other hand if it's above 40 degrees.. when i start it.. is sounds like a lawn mower and no chugging.. any help? No lites no codes.
Check for a Exhaust leak. Thats my first guess... I had a 87 Toyta tercel that had an exhaust leak, it ran the exact same way, the Explorer is starting to run the same way. Im going to do a tune up on it before i replace the flex pipe/Muffler.
Yeah its the intake gaskets and o-rings. I think you have the plastic intake which adds to the problems. Plastic warps, O-rings get hard = vacuum leak. When engine warms up, o-rings seal better. Seen this several times.
Yes the gaskets are cheap but I think Jharger might have hit the labour a little low depending where you are located. Up here in Canada it was more like $500-$600 labour.
$30.00~! Damn, I got beat! I paid around 80 bucks for a FelPro set that included metal valley gasket, O-rings, valve cover gaskets, and fuel rail gaskets. Does all that come in the $30.00 kit?

Canadian $ I hope!
Man, what kind of hourly rate are they one?
I just did this last weekend to my buddy's car, only the second gasket set I've EVER done mine was the first....
And even outside in the cold I had the job licked and a couple other little things done in 2 1/2 hours., woulda been MUCH less in a well equipped, warm shop.
$500 labour and you're being SCREWED. OUCH!
Even my first time took only 4 hours or so, and I had to look everywhere for hidden screws, couldn't figure out how to get the EGR off, all that good stuff.
Not have to do with any hours spent - only book time. Book time will say R&R intake manifold gaskets at 4.3 hours...or whatever the time. If you do it in 2.5 then you beat the book but still charge the 4.3 hours. That's how the auto repair industry works and is regulated that way. If it takes 5.7 hours and you get charged the extra time (because the mechanic was incompetent or broke a bolt and took extra time to repair it...) you don't have to pay for any more hours above the book time.
So it works both ways. Obviously shops try to cram as much in as possible, beat the book time and get the mechanics working on the next job to bring more money in.
