I remember all of this stuff. I worked in a gas station in the early sixties.
AeroColorado,
I have a John Deere 1949 Model "M" tractor with a manual start "Button". You pull the button, and a metal rod pushes down on the starter button on top of the starter. 53 years old, and I mow with it every week! They really don't make them like that anymore.

the graphite was made by arco. had a buddy with a leaky chevy, truck was leaving nasty stains all over his driveway. he took a case of the stuff and covered the whole driveway to hide the stains. white carpet lasted about two days in the house, then it rained, wash from the drive killed about an acre of lawn. not a totally sucessful experiment. i think avgas is still purple.

Manual buttons are coming back. The Honda S2000 and many hughend sports cars come with them and many like the Miata.net are installing them as an option. They call it the Big Red Button or BRB.
I remember the Clark Gas Station chain used to sell used motor oil in mason looking jars with a metal funnel lid/pouring spout. Cost was 15 cents.
They had safe's in the floor of the stations. There was a lockout device that activated if you were to take a hammer & Chizel to the concrete around it. An earthquake locked all of them and they had to remove the safe's.
well bicycles now use some stuff called slime. its green and you put it in your tire. i believe its the same stuff they used on tractors and other off road equipment.
It wasn't green in the old days. It was clear and had tiny particles of red rubber in it, it was called "NeverLeak". It made tubes hell to get out of tires when it leaked out of a thousand thorn punctures:-) The actual thick rubber thorn proof tire tubes from Western Auto helped a lot (more $ == le$$ neverLeak). I didn't have to run Neverleak in my bike tires. NeverLeak was/is also hell on tire pressure testers. We wouldn't let the kids use our pressure gages on their tires. We taught them to use the puff-squeeze-bounce method with no problems. We had a few kids sneak in and try filling a bike tire the first time themselves, just like they had seen us fill car tires, -BOOM! We tried to intercept kids coming in so we could teach them. Thankfully no injuries for any first-timers. We did have a few parents come in screaming about what we had done to their kid's tire, -yeah right... I guess they were early examples of liberal yuppie "Naderites". In those days it was OK just to call them idiotic morons and send them packing.
I worked in a service station in the late 60's.
Thanks for using FTE!

Doesnt surprise me that ARCO came out with that oil...I have a couple of engineer type buddies that work for ARCO, from the stories Ive heard You cant PAY me enough money to used their products...Although, AM/PM convienance store coffe will keep ya goin at 3 am...
I remember my high school shop teacher saying that recycled oil was just as good as that fancy high priced stuff...I wonder if HE owned stock in ARCO as well....
Hey How about the Popiel Pocket Fisherman I don't know if the spelling is correct but the memories of lines tangling all up in the thing and never working right is still fresh in my mind. I still see them up for auction on Ebay and kinda snicker about them. I probably wouldnt mind just having one for the keepsake value. I know this isnt usually a topic for garage and workshop , but I know mine ended up there alot.
