Help PLEASE

I would have searched on this topic "because I know it has been beat to death"..... But I did not know what to type in the search feature . My question is where can I find the head and block cast numbers for my truck. The truck is an 83' f-250 w/ a 460..

Thanks,

Pj

The block number should be by the starter & is difficult to see. It is likely a D9TE. The head numbers are (usually) directly over the third exhaust port from the left, right under the rocker cover flange. I have "heard" (so take it with a big ol' grain of salt, as my daddy used to say) that some of the early '80s heads had the casting #s under the cover (i.e. by the springs, etc.), rather than over the port, but I've never seen it myself.

Homespun91,
I have an 86 F250 460 and I can't find the head #s above the exhaust anywhere, maybe inside valve covers. and my truck is original.

there was some of the mid 80s heads that didn't have a casting number on them at all, you might have some of those. For all intents and purposes they are the same as the D3VE heads.

And apparently there are D7 & D8 castings that are functionally identical to the D3s as well. The '80s stuff I've found so far (not a huge amount, a dozen or so) has all been D3VE, or EFI, a whole 'nother animal.

Kermmy, in the interest of historical accuracy, you need to pull & disassemble the entire engine, preferably tonight. We'll expect a full report by morning.

The casting numbers on my '84 E-350 were underneath but on the intake side. None of the photos I've seen show them there. D3VE's.
