HELLO EVERYONE
I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE GEARBOX ARE ONE ASSEMBLEY. IS THIS TRUE AND IF SO WHAT CAN I DO TO CHANGE MY COLUMN?
THE STEERING WHEEL IS TO CLOSE TO YOU WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING.
Ok Thanks. I Was Wanting To Change My Column To Something With Tilt. I Was Told That A 84 Toyota Camary Power Steering Box Will Work On The 63 & 64 I Will Soon Find Out. Thanks Again .
The box and shaft are integral to each other. the steering wheel cannot be moved down or up. The outter collum cover and shift tubes encase the SOLID 5/8" Shaft. Thats why old timers call them widow makers in a frontal collision.
A camry box will not work as it is a rack n pinion type. The Steering box swap is a toyota mid eighties front steer four wheel drive box. Look up No Limit Engineering, they have a fat fendered toyota conversion kit that can be adapted to slicks 61 to 64.
I'm a healthy guy and I want a shorter column also, but has too many other projects. A quick fix I'm considering is an aftermarket steering wheel. I think stock is 18" od. I'm looking at a 15 1/2 od wheel. That will give an extra 1 1/2 inches aprox of space/clearance.
